***We drove to the Yawgoog Camp grounds (61 Camp Yawgoog Rd, Rockville, RI 02873) and turned right at the gate and found a long lot to park in.Β  We walked through the camp ground to assess the trails ( I’m not so sure we should have, no one was inside the grounds except a handy man that was helpful and directed us to the trail). I called and spoke to some one at the camp site who said that is the designated lot for hikers.Β

This is not to be confused with Yagoo as I initially did.

The kids and I really liked Yawgoog Pond. There were so many rocks with a tremendous amount a various types of lichen on them, small planked walkways and β€œbridges” to get over muddy areas, a moss β€œblanket” and an amazing view at the pond. Fall is definitely upon us and we felt it while walking the grounds here. There were so many tall beautiful trees in various colors and varieties. There were also numerous leaves on the ground that had already fallen. The colors and the landscape with all the slopes and rocks made this area really fun for the kids. They loved running down the hills and climbing all the many rocks. With that being said, this wasn’t the easiest of terrains. It was mostly fine for us. I slipped a couple of times on some sloping rocks but my son fell often ( his norm when he excitedly runs through trails). There were a lot of tree roots and rocks to trip over though (in his defense).

We followed the yellow blazes around the pond. Most of it was fine, however, there were 2 questionable spots where we would have gotten lost if it weren’t for a couple of very nice hikers we bumped into at exactly the right times. At the start of the hike, we spoke to a construction worker at the Boy Scout camp who told us that he would soon be re-blazing the trail. I’m sure it will be even better and with less hiccups once that is done.

What is this?Β  Β I think it is a type of lichen that gets larger and darker??? anyone know?Β  I haven’t seen it much but I saw it here and in NH at Quincy BOG

toward the parking lot. she was walking on every “balance beam” she could find because that’s what kids do!

The Skinny:

  • Weather :Β  AΒ  nice dry day ideally because it is mostly an outdoor location
  • Parking and Admissions : Plenty of free parking.
  • Location :Β  This is a 1,800-acre reservation for the Boy Scouts but they allow use of their trails preferably on weekdays.Β  The Yawgoog Pond trail is a fun 5.2 mile loop.Β  The beginning (if you go clock-wise) was tough but smooth sailing after that the whole way through.
  • Hours : Daylight hours
  • Duration : We spent 3 hours here exploring and enjoying the scenery
  • Tips and Recommendations : Pack some snacks and warm clothes if visiting during fall because you will find a fair amount of shade.Β  Also water and good shoes are a must!
