Enjoying Life sciences at Boston Museum of science
By the way, if your kids love animals like mine, MOS has an array of living animals to see. We saw several small creatures including insects, snakes, turtles, bunnies as well as several species of taxidermy. Although preserved animals aren’t our thing, they do afford opportunities to get up close to animals to see their true sizes and textures which is unreal and eye-opening. When visiting in winter, we didn’t see any butterflies but were told they do have a small butterfly experience in warmer months.
My son is a dinosaur lover so he enjoyed seeing how large they really wereThis image shows the Antarctica room where the beluga whales swim by and we have to learn their noises in order to record if we hear them. There is a real wall of ice in this room the kids loved touching. it was super cold and unexpected. This is a picture of us standing in front of a thermal camera showing where the heat is in our bodies, super cool!Jewel was having fun with this device. looking through the holes at the picture makes the image look completely different. Here’s the Science at the playground which is so much fun for the kids. It has swings, a sea saw , this merry-go-round and more teaching about objects in motion, pendulums, balancing and more.Who doesn’t love a good ball run? especially one that you can change and make better as you go. This is the STEM space and it has computers, hands-on trial and error activities and involves so much learning through play. This is a picture at the main lobby showing the Boston skyscrapers in the backdrop. Because The Museum of science is directly abutting the Charles River there’s a lovely view. The kids were having a ball with the light room. it takes your picture and then you clear out and your shadow is on the wall positioned the way you posedhand stand fun!Talk about eye-catching. Here’s a moon demanding attention. There is a super tall plant wall when you walk into the main entrance positioned perfectly to receive incoming light light from the large windows. The lower floor has this fun kids space that the kids can crawl into. It shows a possible ecosystem under ground AT THE CHARLES RIVER that we may not have been aware of. Its fun for the kids and yes I did get called to crawl in with them and obliged. hahaThis is a very interesting exhibit. Not sure if I would even call it that as patrons can just see this this space from a glass door. This is the Colby room dedicated from Colonel Colby (1882-1953). He was a world traveler and big games hunter awho PROVIDED A BIG ENDOWMENT TO THE MUSEUM. THIS IS a replica from HIS HOUSE AND souvenirs from his TRAVELS. THE display GIVES a glimpse into his life through his hobbies and wealth. Defiantly not my thing to hunt animals but, it is interesting to see how people or, shall I say , the Uber wealthy lived back in the day.We watched THE Serengeti movie in the Mugar Omni Theater.the kids would prefer cartoons but I will say with the wrap around panoramic, the views of stampedes and aerials are pretty sick in the omni theaterLIVE ANIMALS CARE CENTERIF YOU WALK TOAWRD THE GALLERIA MALL BY THE CHARLES RIVER THIS IS YOUR BEAUTIFUL BACKDROP. YOU WILL FIND PLENTY OF RUNNERS HERe YEAR ROUNDWE FOUND THE TAXIDERMY INSIGHTFULHERE IS AN IMAGE FROM THE SPACE EXHIBIT THAT IS OUT OF THIS WORLD! ( SORRY I HAD TO )
The Skinny:
Weather : As Boston Museum of Science is an indoor space, weather doesn’t matter although its great to visit Boston on a day where you can walk around outside.
Parking : There is a parking garage on the property.
Admissions : Adult $29, kids (3-11) $ 24 , Seniors (60 +) $25, under 3 is FREE. you can become a Museum of science member for $100-$235 depending on your needs. This includes membership reciprocity to other science centers, museums and zoos in the nation. What an economical way to visit various places with the kids!
Location : A large science museum with 3 long floors packed with information and things to touch, smell and play with. We never completed the museum in 1 day. That’s because theres a lot of ground to cover and we like to take our time. But, maybe after having an overview you could go back and complete your top interests in 1 day.
Hours : Saturday – Thursday: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, Friday: 9:00 am – 9:00 pm
Duration : We tend to come mid-day and stay until closing time, That means we spend 4-5 hours easily at Boston MOS with still more left to see and do.
Tips and Recommendations : There is a cafe inside the Boston Museum of Science but the Galleria Mall with restaurants is close by as well. If you want a better meal, check it out as it’s in walking distance.
