what to enjoy at lincoln woods :

The kids I enjoyed Lincoln Woods State Park very much. It has some hiking trails, a small beach, a nature center, kayak rentals, picnic tables and a 2.5 mile exercising paved path loop. There is also a small marsh, open fields for playing ball with gazebos nearby and a wooden bridge to enter the beach pavilion area. The boat ramp area has a picturesque, panoramic view so don’t miss it!

Should you go on the paved trail with the kids :

My kids loved the views of the water. They liked seeing families fishing nearby. My son enjoyed the hiking path, my daughter did NOT. She just wanted to be on the beach and play in the sand. With that being said, she is the type that after 5 minutes of a bike ride says her legs are tired! She is 5 years old, so it’s pretty unbelievable. πŸ˜‚ So, if you have a β€œJewel” at home, I would suggest skipping the walking loop. We did see some other young kids on the path walking or on bikes and scooters. Jamison, on the other hand who is 3, enjoyed the walk and didn’t complain once! We had many breaks for food or just to relax and read a book by the water. Honestly, heading into the loop I had no idea it was 2.5 miles or I would have declined. So, I guess it just depends on your child’s personality and activity level as to whether or not you try this loop out.

It was very refreshing for me even at a slow pace with the 2 kids. Β  It’s literally a breath of fresh air to be outside and burn off some steam. Β My daughter snapped out of her bad mood as soon as we got to the water again and was delighted to play by the shore and feed the ducks. Needless to say, both kids slept really well that night!

The nature center here teaches all sorts of important environmental education to passersby and interested visitors – did you know this? We recently learned that bread is bad for them!

THE SKINNY:

  • Location : A State park located very close to cities and urban life but feels like you stepped into the country. Activities include horseback riding , hiking, biking, dog -walking, ball play, swimming, ice skating, kayaking, fishing and recreation. Newer construction of the pavilion and nature center that uses green technology such as solar energy to heat water for the facility bathrooms. Food is available for sale at the pavilion in season or you are welcome to bring your own.
  • Admission and Parking : FREE
  • Duration : We stayed about 2 and a half hours
  • Cons : No playground for kids and the walking loop forces you to be on the same street that cars drive on for a small portion so that is a bit frustrating with young kids. Drivers tended to be patient of pedestrians though. When in the loop paved walkway, you will see a division of 2 separate lanes, one for bikes and the others for walking. It is a one-way with signs throughout so it makes back-tracking feel taboo.
  • Recommendations : Sneakers, snacks, water, sun screen, a reusable bag to take home your trash (a MUST-DO in my eyes), towels and bikes.

visiting Lincoln woods throughout the year :

Checking out the beach in Lincoln Woods during the spring and summer months is great because its low-key and relaxing, ride bikes as a family around the loop will be great with confident and capable kids.Β  Kayak rentals are easy and fun for exercise and to further explore the pond.Β  Horseback riding is something we are looking forward to trying here once the weather cools a bit. We haven’t tried, but hear they offer ice skating in the winter-that would be so pretty with the trees as a backdrop.Β  There is certainly a lot to do at Lincoln Woods!

Let me know what you and your family thought. I hope you enjoyed yourselves!Β  While in the area be sure to check out Purgatory Chasm which is about 25 minutes away and Wolf Hill Forest Preserve which is about 15 minutes away.Β  Both provide fun for the whole family via hiking trails but Purgatory Chasm also has a playground on the property and an ice cream shop close by.Β  Another area to ride bikes is the Blackstone River State Park which is about 11 minutes away from Lincoln Woods Park.Β
