Take the kids to Providence Children’s Museum for a fun day indoors. Theย Providence Children’s Museum is simply magical! The kids can touch everything. There are several activities that promote learning and fun. From building with blocks to climbing, waterplay and imaginary play in staged rooms. ย The kids love it all.

What the Providence Children’s Museum has inside to do:

Inside, thereโ€™s a bodega ( Spanish grocery store ) with a scale, and it is also equipped with an old fashioned telephone, and cash register. The kids are able to pretend to weigh and buy fresh produce. Many rooms have dress up clothes from certain times in Rhode Island history. There is a masonry room with โ€œbricksโ€ and โ€œhammersโ€ that are made of styrofoam for the kids to build and play. There are plaques set up for reading the history of each room, each with a button to press about the room (very muffled in the noise from all the excited kids though). ย

For younger kids (under 4), thereโ€™s a treehouse with a slide and animal costumes to pretend play forest animals (because what kid doesn’t love to dress up?) There is an outdoor area full of local Rhode Island creatures (sculptures, not real) for the kids to learn about and identify. ย There are a few tunnels outside for the kids to crawl through, and a circle area for when it is story time, or simply a place to gather.

What else is good to Know when visiting the Providence Children’s Museum:

The kids really have endless hours of fun at Providence Children’s Museum! They offer memberships, birthday parties and have designated free nights periodically. My kids never leave willingly. Usually the place is closing so we HAVE TO go. Thatโ€™s fine by me because there is so much for them to enjoy…the whole time we are here they donโ€™t sit still. They want to try everything and do everything! Itโ€™s an enjoyable time for parents as well.

This would be an amazing at home version of the tunnel idea if it was a hit for your kids! ย Every kid makes forts and plays pretend so this adjustable mat would allow everyday fun at home and the use of a cool tunnel too.

Reminds me of these super cool blocks that kids build with and the light shines a colorful reflection across the room.

Providence Children's Museum with kids in Rhode IslandAre you a fan of Children’s Museums? ย We have been to several: ย check out Portland’s Children’s Museum and Theater of Maine for maritime fun and Niantic’s Children’s Museum in Connecticut with the largest wind tube play we have ever seen. ย Both of these fun locations are coastal and worth a visit.

If life sciences is more of your speed, visit Rhode Island’s Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium in Bristol or Save the Bay Exploration Center Aquarium in Newport.

ย The Skinny:

  • Recommendations : A must-see location, especially for children 2-5 years of age as they can explore, learn, build, play and burn off energy. ย Be prepared for the business that ensues in winter or rainy days. ย Wear masks and reserve tickets on-line in advance to be certain you can get in.

  • Inside : A hands-on fun center geared toward kids exploring music, art, play, history, culture and creativity with information about Rhode Island on two levels with an enclosed outside play space. ย Their newest area is an innovation lab for further investigating subjects of wood-working, video animation, robotics and 3-d printing. ย Sadly, it was not open when we visited.

  • Cost : $14 for adults and kids, babies under 12 months- FREE.

  • Duration :ย  We easily spent 3 hours each time we went, and the kids wanted more.

  • Weather :ย  Any as this is mostly an inside place.

  • Hours :ย Wednesday -Sunday in two sessoionsย 9:30-12:30 and 1:30-4:30. ย They used to offer some Fridays until 8 on the Free Friday MetLife day-worth checking the calendar for!
