We loved Oak Knoll Wildlife Refuge for many reasons. Most of the trail was shaded so it was comfortable even in the muggy heat of summer.Β  It’s ease of walk-ability, diverse habitats, beautiful birds singing, dragonflies, Lake Talaquega, kid’s play area with hut, well marked trails, and abundance of flowers at the site entrance with informative pamphlets are several reasons to be fans of this area.

Due to the butterfly garden, we saw numerous bugs that the kids enjoyed. Most of which were pollinators, so we love that! We have been working on tree and plant identification so this was a perfect location to progress with ourΒ  ID skills.

We saw so many mushrooms here that the kids loved to point out.Β  It was kind of like the kids’ scavenger hunt competition with each other during the hike.Β  I didn’t see either of these both times they were directly in front of me, but the kids pointed out both a snake and a frog.Β  They were difficult to see even in hindsight because of their ability to sit statue still and camouflage. The kids get thrilled that they are able to see these creatures in their natural environment and love to be the first ones to spot them.Β Β

The Skinny:

  • Weather : It has to be a nice day because it is outside
  • Parking and Admissions : Free parking and donations are suggested at $2 per person. Currently the restrooms and Nature center are closed due to COVID-19 but the trails are open
  • Hours : Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 am-4:30 pm; Sunday, 10:00 am-4:00 pm; closed Monday Trails: Daily, dawn to dusk
  • Location : Oak Knoll wildlife refuge has 1.5 miles of hiking trails with educational placards placed throughout and a kid friendly nature play area to encourage imagination and creativity. There is a lake, streams, butterfly garden, and a marsh. All of these areas make for so many diverse possibilities to see wild life sightings.
  • Duration : We spent 2 and a half hours here but didn’t go inside so if you do, you can surely spend more time here
  • Tips and Recommendations : Take some sun screen, bug spray, binoculars, good sneakers and snacks with water.Β  We sat on a few tree stumps and enjoyed a sunny snack together which was great to attempt to see any animals that are nearby or have been in the area recently.

one of the many informative placards along the trail, some tell about birds and are very interesting. This salamander seems to be their logo, sadly we have never seen one-fingers crossed for us

Not sure what this is about? I assume the tree fell and took the land over with it due to its roots? Look how big it is next to Jamison though
