Charlestown beach is a beautiful town beach so it’s smaller and less crowded than the bigger beaches. It is known to be a family beach.

The sand was smooth with some small pebbles throughout but comfortable for walking. The thing that I couldn’t understand is how this is a family beach with so many small children and the waves are huge! I was holding my son and the wave literally knocked him out of my arms. We were both panicked for an instant but we recovered swiftly. In hindsight there is a sign about the waves, I guess I just didn’t expect it because of the amount of small kids here. My kids can’t comfortably go in the water alone at this beach unlike others we have visited with small or barely any waves. My daughter normally spends the entire time in the water so this was not ideal for her. If we weren’t in the water she wasn’t either.

Older kids would probably love it here! There were a ton of boogie boarders and I’m sure that would be thrilling for them.

We spent most of the day walking to the jetty, playing in the sand eating at the blanket and making trips back and forth to the water for dips here and there. All and all, it was still a fun family day outside in the sun, together.

The Skinny :

• Weather : It has to be a nice day because it is outside
• Parking and Admissions : $20 parking is the entrance fee-we went on a weekday, $30 is the rate during the weekend or holidays.  The parking is a short distance across a non-busy street.
• Location : Charlestown Beach is a beautiful family beach close to a jetty for fishing and sight seeing
• Duration : We got here at 10am and stayed until 3.
• Tips and Recommendations : Arrive early so you are certain to get a spot especially now with COVID parking restrictions
• Cons : The waves were too big for my small-framed, young kids.  Its probably fantastic for those that are skilled swimmers and love to boogie board or body surf.  We are not there yet though.  The lower rating was strictly due to the size of the waves and the kids’ lack of comfort in the water.
• Hours : 9-5 during weekdays and 8-5 during weekends and holidays
