The ECHO Leahy Museum for Lake Champlain is a great way to enjoy a rainy day in Burlington with the kids. What my kids liked most were the animals found in Lake Champlain and the water play / camp area on the third floor.

As a parent, it is nice to see my kids enjoying all the hands-on activities here. The kids learned about the power of tools and how they help to make daily tasks easier, they engineered a platform that allowed them to save a turtle, they enjoyed pretend play in the staged food area of the shop and looked out from the viewing platform at ECHO Leahy to see the approaching storm over Lake Champlain, loved seeing local animals and much more!

When in the area of this museum, there is a ton to do for adults and kids. For example, bike riding with the family on Burlington Greenway, unwinding with an adult drink and snack at Foam Brewery and soaking up the views while walking the boardwalk and swinging on the bench chairs close to the ECHO Leahy center.

The kids were having fun trying to operate this hovercraft. The goal was to show how easy this heavy object moved with the help of air

my son really got into the engineering activity. He loves animals so he was excited to save a sea turtle with this trial and error in making the platform to send him to safety

Foam Brewers was a less than 5 minute walk from the ECHO Leahy Center. we sat out back on a picnic table and enjoyed a charcuterie board with beers and ciders

The Skinny:

  • Weather :  The ECHO Leahy Center is mostly indoors so it’s okay to visit if its raining or yucky outside, but I would say the area as a whole is better if its a nice, dry day because it is pedestrian friendly and the views from the boardwalk and center are great.
  • Parking and Admissions: There may be street parking accessible, but we parked in the lot directly in front of the museum for $3 an hour.  Museum members park for $2 an hour.  The cost for admission into the center are Adults: $18, Students & Seniors:$16, Children (ages 3-17): $14.50, Members: Free, Children 2 and under: Free
  • Location : This Lake Champlain waterfront center is a hands-on, indoor space where the kids can learn about local animals, environmental issues, weather, engineering, science and geography as well as play and enjoy.
  • Duration : We stayed in this center for about one and a half to two hours with the kids.
  • Tips and Recommendations : Visit the third floor last because once they see the water play area, they aren’t going to want to leave.  It’s that much fun!

the kids had so much fun visiting this coastal center on a rainy day

As mentioned before, this beautiful, water front area in Burlington has plenty to do.  If you are looking to get outside of the city and be in nature while in Vermont with the kids, be sure to check out Bingham Falls and Moss Glen Falls both in Stowe less than an hour away.  In both posts I provide other family-friendly activities while in Stowe.
