What we liked about Freetown Fall River State Forest

The kids enjoyed hiking the ledge trail at Freeport Fall River State Forest. It has wide, dirt trails with off shoots throughout creating more exploring opportunities for everyone. This was our first trail we ever visited where we experienced dirt bikes around us. It was certainly exciting for us to watch and feel a thrill when the bikers flew by us. They were very loud, but that’s a great safety feature because we all knew when they were getting close and we could clear off the dirt trail to make room for them.

Besides the dirt bikers, what we adored about the trail was that it has an overlook where a pond is seen from above and if you follow along the trail you get another perspective of the same view because it takes you to the base of the pond. It’s very 😎 cool. My kids and I really thought that was special.

Having visited in late fall, the leaves were mostly gone and the trees bare but the sun was shining and the sky was blue so we didn’t mind it. We do have wishes to return and see the various seasons here. I’m sure they are all beautiful.

  • Weather : Visit on a day where it is comfortable to be outside as this is an outdoor location with no shelter.
  • Parking and Admissions:  There is a very big lot where many trucks parked with dirt bikes in tow but we parked on the side of the road at a closed gate that led us to a dirt path from Alltrails.  There were several cars parked alongside the road too.
  • Location :  This is a 5,000 acre State Forest with 25 miles of dirt trails that are mostly flat. This post was written with our experience of the Ledge Loop offering an overlook with a mild incline.  Activities at this park include hiking, dirt biking, swimming, cross country skiing, horse back riding, mountain biking, fishing and hunting.
  • Hours : Sunrise to sunset
  • Duration : The kids spent 2 hours or so here but it was cold out so that was sufficient for us.  Of course they stopped for snacks a bit and enjoyed several breaks to view the scenery.
  • Tips and Recommendations :  Bring the dogs!

If you liked this hiking trail due to the overlook, you should also try Artist Bluff in New Hampshire.  It is more of a challenge but offers a dog friendly hike with a gorgeous overlook.  Norman Bird Sanctuary in Rhode Island offers a special view of the Middletown Beaches.  Massachusett’s Blue Hills Sky Line Trail offers a beautiful view of the city of Boston from the woods.  For another city view, check out Rhode Island’s Neutaconkaunt Hill Park.
