What there is to do at Gammino Pond :

Gammino Pond is really quite nice. It has wide dirt trails and pond views. There is some wildlife to see especially swans, birds and chipmunks. There is a rope swing that is set up over the pond. People like to fish here and walk the trails for exercise with leashed dogs.

There are posted signs about the trails and directions to each point of interest throughout the hike. Also there is signage explaining about invasive species found throughout the area to educate those who visit. I was shocked in regards to the Multiflora Rose being invasive as I’ve seen it so much throughout my hikes and never knew. It is actually a nice looking plant and the flowers smell amazing! Β Who knew?

What the kids love about Gammino Pond :

We love the rock garden at Gammino Pond. It is a really nice touch. The kids found several rocks on the trails throughout our hike and they were so excited with each find. It is like a game to find them because they are tucked in the nooks of trees and under the crevices of larger rocks. It is great to see their excitement. They want to take them all home but I explained that we had to save some for other kids. They begrudgingly understood because they want other kids to feel the same excitement they felt when they found the rocks.

The amount of rocks here with their nice sayings and paintings inspired us to want to make some of our own. This is definitely something I will put on the always lengthy to-do list so I can replenish the ones we took! I wholeheartedly love the idea. I later learned that a Facebook group called β€œThe Kindness Rocks Project” out of Rehoboth is mostly responsible for the painted rocks here.

Another cool thing about Β Gammino Pond, is that the meadow has amazingly happy birds. I saw some oriels, tree swallows and several other kinds of birds. There are picnic tables, benches a big gazebo that is located behind the library. Β So it’s a great spot to grab some books and bird watch.

These invasives are everywhere! I’ve been hiking all around New England and I always see these flowers so they have literally “spread like wild flowers”

Not sure what this is? I tried to lift it because I initially thought it was trash but we saw it in several places and it has hard earth all around it so its not going anywhere!

The Skinny:

  • Weather : It has to be a nice day because it is completely outside
  • Parking and Admissions : Plenty of FREE parking and admissions
  • Location : Man-made pond with trails around it. Some trails continue past the blazed trails that are part of the Gammino loop but look to be well-maintained.Β  We did not take any of these trails but there are many if you feel like exploring.Β  All-trails says the loop around the pond is 1.1 miles and rated EASY but if you want more, there are more options, as I mentioned.Β  There is also a meadow and wildlife throughout.Β Β
  • Cons : This location has some trash mostly in the form of small liquor bottles and food waste containers. We decided to clean up as we went. It was impossible to get everything because there was also a fair amount of fishing line tangled on trees and some garbage in the water. I think an organized clean up would be an amazing idea here. The park has recycling bins at the parking lot and they do encourage you to clean up with posted signs.
  • Duration : We spent 2 hours or so here. We visited on several occasions
  • Tips and Recommendations : So there is the obvious that I mention pretty routinely-sunscreen and bug spray. I would also say a trash bag and hand sanitizer are also great ideas. Also if your kids want to partake in the rock decorating / giving it would be great to leave some here!

If you liked hiking at Gammino Pond with the kids, another great area to explore would be Fisherville BrookΒ in Rhode Island and Borderland State Park in Massachusetts. Β Both have water and beautiful nature trails.

  1. You know…you can drive by something for years and never notice things. This conservation area looks wonderful to explore with children. Your suggestion of taking a trash bag is a great one. Your children learn by example and if they see you being caring and responsible, they will follow your lead.

    1. I know! I feel like I myself have driven by this area not knowing what it was and didn’t pay too much attention to it either. Funny how when we rush about our busy life that can happen. My kids are actually the driving force with the trash collection. They hate it so much. It bothers them to see beautiful areas littered. Jewel tends to point out all the trash and yell with an urgency that is compelling enough for anyone to be alarmed and want to assist. She suggested I make rocks and leave them in this area saying “No Littering.” Its actually a great idea that I hope to comply with soon. Thanks for your kind words. ; )
