George B Parker Woodland Wildlife Refuge is very lush! We visited in mid-late spring so things had a chance to really grow by this time! It’s very pretty being on this trail with all the green leaves around you. With that being said, for me, I think going out with just the kids here isn’t the best idea. It is a 7 mile round-trip hike and it is pretty secluded.Β There were wooden bridges, planks over muddy areas, birds and bird houses, streams and a meadow, wooden stairs, many rocks, rock walls and rock cairns, various levels of landscaping making for an easy downhill path or a not so easy uphill trek, which provides a great workout for everyone.

I loved the biodiversity among the trees here.Β  I saw so many different types of foliage.Β  It was great.Β  We all loved being out on the trails at Parker Woodland Wildlife Refuge but, I did find it to be a challenge for my kids due to the varying elevations.Β  At times, I found it tough so understandably so for those little legs I’m sure it was challenging.Β  We did not make it through all 7 miles because the kids were getting tired.Β  We did hike for about an hour though.Β  None of us saw birds but, they were everywhere.Β  We heard them singing and the woodpeckers drilling into trees.Β  They were all enchanting noises that excited the kids.

The Skinny:

  • Hours : Sunrise to sun set
  • Location : Parker Woodland Wildlife Refuge is 7 miles, 860 acres of trail and grounds, hiking scale : moderate to challenging
  • Admission and Parking : FREE and plenty of parking-2 lots available. Β Lot number 1 is the address listed here above.
  • Duration : We spent a hour-hour and a half here
  • Recommendations :Β
    1. Going out with just the kids here isn’t the best idea.Β  It’s secluded so take at least another adult.
    2. Definitely wear sunscreen and bug spray.
    3. Β This trail system is best for kids somewhat older due to the various pitches in the land, it can really wear out little legs after a half hour or so.Β  Probably ideal for 8 years and older.Β  You can still go with young kids but you may stay for a shorter duration or carry them a bit when they become tired.
    4. Pack some snacks for inside the trails in case you get hungry and of course water
    5. Binoculars would help and a camera to take the best shots.
    6. Hiking shoes ideally-sneakers are okay but this area is very rocky and some of the rocks are staggered which can cause you to roll your ankle.
    7. Leave the dogs at home as they aren’t allowed in any Audubon trails.
    8. This is a great location to trail run due to the varying elevations its quite fun.
