Rhode Island’s Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium is super cool! Β The kids and I visited several times outside but due to COVID-19 their indoor space was closed for a while. Β  Now it is open and a great place for the kids to learn and enjoy.Β  My kids being 3 and 5 then had just learned about pollinators so the pollination garden was exciting for them!Β  We did see a lot of pretty butterflies and bees while here.Β  Also the garden itself is great!Β  It has various fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs.Β  My favorite part is the natural arbor that has a bench under it.Β  It is such an amazing display of beautiful, twisted, artistic plants with the only downside being that now my husband wants one for our house-haha!Β  You can also find a pond where we actually saw a frog. I was shocked to see the two Ravens in the back of the building (Lucy and Zach), they were much bigger than I expected and seem like friendly birds.Β  They were very curious about us and engaging to watch.Β  They can actually been seen on this live webcam.

The Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium is a fantastic place to enjoy a short walk especially for young kids.Β  The reason I say that is because, I wanted a longer hike personallyΒ  (it is only a quarter of a mile ) because I’m the type of person that can stay out all day exploring.Β  My kids however, especially my daughter, was completely content with the length of the hike and ready to get to the next activity.Β  She just gets bored fast and doesn’t appreciate lengthy hikes at her young age.Β  Hopefully that changes so she can be my partner in crime forever ; ) . They both, however, DID appreciate the hike itself with many happy birds swooping and gliding nearby and singing loudly, the wooden walkway of the trail, the ocean view looking into the Narragansett Bay and the Osprey nest!Β  Having recently gone to Osamequin Nature Reserve and Bird Sanctuary we were familiar with these birds and the kids pointed them out excitedly.Β  It was so cute.Β  They are proud of their newly-found knowledge.

Another convenient thing is that the East Bay Bike path runs across this trail so if you are in need of more adventure, like myself, you can always take a turn onto the bike path from the nature hike.

Inside the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium, you can learn about local Rhode Island habitats and animals, discover animals found in Rhode Island tide pools, and see a replica of a whale. Β The Rhode Island Audubon also offers guided walks, birding classes, lectures, camps birthday parties and family activities throughout the year. Β The gift shop sells binocularsΒ  bird feeders and eco-friendly goods.Β  We found some very informative activity books there as well as some animal souvenirs the kids enjoyed that were very reasonably priced.

    1. Bring binoculars for better viewing of the birds, the Osprey was hard to see because of how far away it was
    2. Bring bug spray and sunscreen
    3. Dogs are not permitted on the trail unlike the East Bay bike path which is leashed dog friendly
    4. Check out the East Bay Bike Path if you would like a longer hike / activity
    5. The Audubon Society offers bird cams that are live and show Zach and LucyΒ  the center’s Common Ravens as well as the Providence Peregrine Falcon on top of the “Superman Building”-so cool!Β
    6. If you can go Friday around 10ish, your kids will love it.Β  The Marine Biology students from Roger Williams University come to feed the animals and care for them.Β  We received a special tour of the animals and up-close encounters of them eating-it was amazing!
    7. The first Saturday of the month you can enter with the family for FREE and there are various activities for the kids to partake in.Β  For instance, they offer animal encounters or crafts.Β
    8. Check the website for activities at each participating location in Smithfield, Bristol and Exeter.Β  Also there are great at-home activities on the website that you can do with the kids.
      Β

I hope you visit this magnificent place and learn some new things about birds, nature and Rhode Island.Β  I know I sure do every time take the kids out!Β  Let me know what you and your kids think of this location.Β  Thanks for your support and I wish you great outdoor adventures!
