World War I Memorial Park and Zoo is an amazingly beautiful place to take the kids! I can’t believe there is something so nice, that is completely FREE, and so well-kept! For me, this location was a really good secret, but one I had to share with everyone.

We are animal lovers, and we also really enjoy being active, and outdoors. So, this place certainly checks all our boxes. I heard about The World War I Memorial Park from one of my daughter’s dance friend’s Mom. Upon visiting I really didn’t know what to expect. I was very impressed. It is a hybrid between a city park with better playgrounds and the farm / field section of the zoo ( since they have deer) So cool- I know! There is also an amazing butterfly garden with metal cutout structures of peacocks and a butterfly and dragonfly bench. Β Flowers that attract butterflies are in the garden so besides the benches, you will probably see some real butterflies which is lovely and magical all at once. A posted heart-felt backstory of the family who setup the garden in honor of their late daughter is present ( so sad but awesome how they decided to share the memory of her life by creating this gorgeous place for us to play and remember her. ) Numerous sitting areas and paths to walk with trees and fresh air make a relaxed and serine environment. A sandbox play area was created to resemble a beach scene ( without the water ) and is equipped with shovels, pails and trucks. Adirondack chairs are found with a shaded pergola close by for adult relaxation while children build and explore . There is a huge slide that I had to try for myself. Β I’ve never seen a slide like this except at the water parks. See the posted video! Also, on top of the aforementioned items, there are fenced animals for viewing and feeding-such a great spot to take kids and unwind! They never wanted to leave or lost interest. Can you tell I’m a fan? I love a great picnic as well and this place offers an amazing view while eating or several other places to sit and chat while watching the kids feed the animals or play on the playground. I can’t recommend this place enough.

THE SKINNY:

  • PlaceΒ : World War I Memorial Park and Zoo is an outdoor park with play areas, mostly farm animals as well as a few other mild-mannered animals for feeding and seeing, countless beautiful places to eat a snack or have a picnic, this is a leashed dog-friendly location
  • Duration : We spent 3 hours but could easily spend more
  • Cost :Β FREE
  • Weather :Β Needs to be a pleasant day as this is completely outdoors
  • Hours :Β Open 7 days a week April 1-October 31 7:30 am-8 pm and November 1st-March 31 st 7:30 am-4 pm, closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day and inclement weather
  • RecommendationsΒ : Water for drinking, and a snack at the very least, sneakers for all and a snack container or small bucket for getting animal food from dispenser ( that way you don’t spill any while trying to hold it and retrieve it from the dispenser), and don’t forget quarters to buy for the animal food!
Β
The longest slide I’ve ever seen-not at a water park!

Feeding the donkey and pony- check out those gentle choppers!

Feeding the deer, cool experience for both me and the kids!
