My kids had fun at Whale Rock. It was a short hike that started out on an open dirt path, moved to a tree enclosed wooden planked path and then ended at an amazing ocean view that was remote and vast as far as the eye can see.
We enjoyed this area very much. It was open at the beach with only 2 other people in sight and they were surfing. It was clean, interesting to look at, and full of wildlife which my family enjoys. We saw a pack of geese, bunnies, a snake and several crabs as well as periwinkles. Talk about diversity! We were thrilled! It was also certainly nice to be in the fresh ocean air and see the leaves starting to transform with the beginning of fall. Every part of this hike was beautiful but the ocean definitely takes the cake.
One minor qualm, is that the hike isnβt that long and the barbed wire fence is off-putting. If you donβt care about that, then itβs a fantastic little hike. Perfect especially for the younger crowd or a new hiker so they donβt have to walk too far. Itβs easy but it does have a lot of tree roots and stones to step on that move and shift a bit.

The Skinny:
- Weather :Β AΒ nice dry day due to completely outdoor location
- Parking and Admissions : FREE and 5-8 spots from what I can tell (limited parking.)
- Location : Whale Rock is a short wooded trail that opens up to an amazing and remote ocean access where the kids loved to explore the tide pools. It is roughly 2 miles in distance.Β It is an easy hike with leashed dogs welcomed.Β wheel chairs and strollers would be a challenge because the planked walkway is narrow and doesn’t extend past the wooded area onto the beach.
- Hours : I can’t seems to find any hours on the websites
- Duration : We spent 2 and a half hours here
- Tips and Recommendations : Wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet that can still walk in the woods with as this area is very diverse in grounds.Β The GPS confused me here, it was telling me to enter the private US training Camp Varnum and I knew I couldn’t since there are large signs not permitting it.Β After the slight confusion, I noticed a small road to the left and decided to investigate.Β Once I turned in, I saw a sign for the hike I was looking for but if I didn’t turn in, there is no visible sign on the main road there.Β Β
