The kids and I really enjoyed visiting Caratunk Wildlife Refuge. There are meadows, forests, small bridges, streams, ponds, birds, chipmunks, frogs and insects ( my son’s favorites🤢. )
One thing I love about this area, is that the trails are so clearly marked. You can not get lost. There are signs posted throughout showing you where you were while looking at the each map. In my opinion, the blue lookout trail is not that interesting. I like the red and the yellow. We didn’t make it to the green.
A man that worked at Caratunk Refuge offered to show us a tree swallow fledgling up close while he was cleaning the bird houses. He explained he had been working there for over 30 years. He also gave us a first hand demonstration of what he does at the refuge. It was a quick but awesome and much appreciated lesson. He held the bird gently while showing it the the kids. The kids were very intrigued.

The Skinny:
- Duration : We went on two separate occasions spending 2 hours the first time ( it was too hot to be in the sunny areas like the meadows on this first visit ) and 3 hours the second time mostly finishing up the trail during more comfortable weather.
- Hours :The website says 7AM to 5 PM but the sign there said they close at 8 PM
- Parking and Admissions : There was plenty of parking and it is FREE to hike here!
- Location : Caratunk Wildlife Refuge is about 200 acres of land including meadows, forests, streams, and ponds and 6 miles of hiking trails. Birdhouses are also setup for 3 species in particular: Purple Martins, Eastern Bluebirds and Tree Swallows. Other animals can comonly be found here. The trails are pretty secluded but on the red trail you will see telephone poles which is bizarre but great for cell phone reception I guess?
- Weather : This is a complete outdoor activity so a decent day is best
- Tips and Recommendations : Bug spray is a must. Also just be aware there are a lot of tree roots and rocks throughout the hike so pay attention so you don’t fall!
