Fort Wetherill offers amazing views of the water. I have found Jamestown in general to be very picturesque with thrashing and crashing waves that hit the coastline with force. It is beautiful and powerful to watch the strength and enormity of the ocean here.

One thing I will say about this location is that I was disappointed that there was no signage about the history of this place. The fort is big and consists of multiple buildings. They are covered from head to toe with graffiti. Most of which is very colorful and even has cartoon characters. There are also a few not so tasteful pictures but my young kids didn’t notice them.

This location has narrow patches that are in some cases overgrown with brush and steep with gnarly roots growing along them. Even still, if you have the ability to walk grounds like these, I think you should go here. My kids loved it and found it adventurous. We went with a small group and they were actually rushing everyone along due to their excitement to explore more.

I also think visiting this location during the fall was a cool idea. This is because, it is kind of spooky here. The buildings have openings and are abandoned. You cannot see inside them well because they are not lit or with natural lighting coming in. The buildings have bars that look like cells and giant bolts. Again, no signage in sight, but it just makes you wonder the history that took place at this location.

The Skinny:

  • Weather : A good weather day.Β  You will be completely in the elements.
  • Parking and Admissions : FREE and ample parking
  • Location : An abandoned fort that was the site of New England’s greatest military power at one point due to its vantage point.Β  Now it is owned by the state of RI and visitors are able to hike the paths, scuba and snorkel, kayak, fish, picnic and enjoy the views!
  • Hours : The website says its opened 24 hours- I would not want to be here at night though!
  • Duration : We spent about 2 hours here.
  • Tips and Recommendations : We didn’t go in the forts there is signage saying not to, but it is dark in there so you may want to take a flashlight to get a better view.Β  Another tip is to wear longer pants.Β  I had on shorts and some of the brush on the trails was very narrow and rubbed on my skin while I hiked.Β  It was uncomfortable and safer with pants due to ticks and poison ivy. Take bug spray!
