Visiting Mohegan Park was fantastic for the kids and me too! Mohegan Park is really big (almost 385 acres), so we just stuck to walking around Spaulding Pond and an adjacent loop. That area offered wildlife and a beautiful view so we were content. This walk was still about 2 miles since we did it twice and ventured out a bit. There are plenty of picnic tables to eat lunch at with very pretty and relaxing views. The vine arbor archways on the walkway toward the restrooms are gorgeous! The fountains in the pond create a tranquil ambiance. During my visit with the kids, we saw so many animals from turtles to birds and chipmunks. The kids were thrilled about that! Many other families were out having cook-outs, fishing, relaxing, exercising or just walking the paved trail like us.

The Skinny:
Location : Mohegan Park is a large recreational park for fishing, exercise, picnics and cook-outs. There is a swimming area in Spaulding Pond that is really on the small side for the size of the park. I’m sure it gets very crowded! Next to the swimming area there is a toddler playground offering small structures for younger kids to play on. Then there is a larger playground for bigger kids to enjoy by the restrooms. There is a Rose Garden here too, Veterans Memorial Rose Garden -the time to check this out is later June to early July! I hope you get a chance to see this because it is beautiful and fragrant! (follow the signs to the Rose garden because it is in a separate location from the pond area we were, you will have to drive the car here.)
Weather : It is outdoors with some shading and covers but I wouldn’t visit if the weather wasn’t going to be good
Hours : Open 8AM to 8PM everyday
Parking and Admission : FREE
Duration : We spent 3 hours here but as I said we didn’t visit the entire park. We could have easily stayed longer especially if we went swimming and on the playground.
Recommendations and Tips : You can pack a lunch or grill at the park- I didn’t see any food vendors. If your kids are in diapers, they need swim diapers to go swimming at the beach. Some trails are paved here so I saw many parents with babies in strollers walking the paths.

If you like to visit gardens, be certain to check out Harkness Park in Connecticut and New England Botanical Garden in Boylston, Massachusetts. Green Animals also has beautiful flowers and gardens in Rhode Island.
